CRT Day 2: Atlanta

Today was very action-packed and powerful. We started out by attending the MLK Sunday service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, across the street from the historical Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. gave speeches and sermons, and a few blocks away from his birth home. After the service we toured King’s birth home. Seeing the house King grew up in, and hearing stories about his childhood, helped develop a more human image of him in my mind. Martin Luther King Jr has almost always been a very abstract figure to me, and seeing his house, family pictures, and possessions made that figure more concrete. After stopping by his grave, we moved on to the International Center for Civil and Human Rights. The center had a profound effect on me, and I was full of emotion while reading about and seeing the incredible commitment and courage of so many people fighting for the rights and liberties of themselves and others. The center illustrated it all beautifully. I hope to someday visit Atlanta again to see these places for a second time, and perhaps explore the city more. Until then, to Birmingham we go.
