Birmingham and Selma

Today we walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. We linked arms, two by two, and walked across singing. To imagine we were literally following in the footsteps of people who were willing to give themselves for the movement. I felt a sense of unity as we marched across, a sense of solidarity. I can only imagine what it must have felt to march over that bridge in 1965, with police and state troopers waiting to beat the marchers on the other side. I like to think I would have had the courage to do that.

On to Montgomery tomorrow.
