Journal Entry

Standing by the Woolworth's counter at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, I felt hopeful. Our tour of the museum started with images and artifacts of brutality: the blood-stained hood of a member of the Klu Klux Klan, followed by photographs of lynch mobs and lynchings. But seeing the positive action that followed from this legacy of hate, the strength formed under these conditions, made me optimistic for the future. I believe that we still live in a system built to treat people of color brutally. But these systems can be temporary, if people stand up--or, in this case, sit down.
