One thing that I heard a lot today was how no one could believe that people of color were treated the way they were (and are). What scares me is, none of this comes as a surprise to me. Maybe it’s because I’ve studied much of the history of the civil rights movement, but I think it runs deeper than that. I have a capacity for empathy that has become a double-edged sword: On one hand, I feel the pain of the oppressed and see the importance and necessity of their movement; while on the other, I completely understand the motives behind the actions of the oppressor, in any case. While this understanding is crucial in the fight for civil rights, I still scare myself by being able to understand how someone could have the capacity for such hatred. I hope I can put it to some use in the future.
